SAVE MERRIWEATHER UPDATE: February 2007
***********************************************
Waiting
For Change...
Aside
from another great spring, summer and fall at Merriweather,
not much has changed with respect to the pavilion's
status. The owners, General Growth Properties, are
still claiming to support keeping the pavilion an
open-air venue and the managers, IMP Productions,
are still doing a great job a filling the stage
and seats. Meanwhile, Howard County is still drafting
a master plan for downtown Columbia, which we expect
to see later this spring. And though the plan's
details remain in question, one thing that is clear
is that the community supports Merriweather and
will not allow a plan or development that could
imperil this local landmark.
That
said, there are some exciting potential changes
in store for Merriweather, some of which were discussed
in this
blog post by Save Merriweather co-founder Ian
Kennedy. At this point, the key to Merriweather's
future is a long-term operating contract for a production
company. Save Merriweather believes strongly that
IMP Productions has done an admirable job at managing
the pavilion and has some great ideas to make it
better. It is in the best interests of everyone
involved to give IMP a lengthy contract so that
they can implement their ideas and ensure the future
success of Merriweather. As this concert seasons
progresses, we hope all parties will see the wisdom
in this approach and will act accordingly in the
fall to implement it.
What
Lies Ahead...
In
the coming months, we’ll be working on more
updates for our website and welcome any suggestions.
Also, we hope to get a chance to gather more support
for our cause this summer and will be looking for
volunteers. If you are interested in helping in
any way, send us an email at info@savemerriweather.com.
Don’t forget, volunteers get outfitted in
snazzy Save Merriweather t-shirts!
